Documentary Preproduction materials: Treatment/Script, Resources, and Schedule

Group: Kaitlyn, Marissa, Rosa

Documentary Subject: DeVonte Glass

Director: Rosa  Hernandez

Title: Shards of Glass

Tagline: Be unapologetically, you.

Logline: Shards of Glass tells the trials and tribulations of a young man whom is both queer and person of color, and the struggles he has had to endure throughout the duration of his life.

Documentary Treatment/Script: DeVonte Glass is a queer, person of color who attends Indiana University South-Bend. He grew up in a predominantly Christian household, and has faced much ostracism from people due to the mere fact he is gay and a person of color. Despite the ostracism that he has faced, DeVonte continues to be a bubbly, spontaneous person, who is compassionate and kind. During his journey, DeVonte has encountered many problems within the LGBTQ+ community, and within his own community that he wishes to address. DeVonte will go into detail about his life growing up, then will lead us to his life in the present. We also wish to showcase how DeVonte has struggled much of his life because of homophobia, racism and so forth. The interview will take place mostly within DeVonte’s dorm, but will include much b-roll to give our interview more variation of shots and location. The b-roll captured will showcase many of DeVonte’s interests and aspirtations. For instance, since DeVonte is a music performance major, and enjoys playing the piano, we will gather b-roll of him playing the piano, and so forth. These shots will take place in an open-spaced environment with a piano present in the room. The camera (during the duration of the interview) will remain somewhat static, other than the use of a zoom lens. Whilst, footage gathered for b-roll will be somewhat static, with the documentary subject doing various things. The documentary is fitting of the realist documentary style. There will not be much manipulation in terms of colorization, lighting, filters, or any of the like. The camera settings will be adjusted to match that of the lighting in the surrounding environment.

Schedule and Resources: Resources will include a Canon Rebel DSLR, a 75-300mm zoom lens,  a tripod, lighting equipment, and a boom mic. We will also need a bedroom area/living space, and an open-spaced environment with a grand piano present for our documentary subject to use. I must reserve this area as soon as possible to assure that it will be open to our use. All shots will be indoors, so it does not matter the weather for that day in specific. The director, editor, and camera person must all be present on the day of filming, as we will need assistance with the boom mic, and lighting. Filming will take place on March 26th, 2017 from 12:30pm to 5:30pm, in order to assure we capture all shots needed. We will first shoot the interview in the dorm/living space area, then gather shots for our b-roll in the piano practice room of Northside Hall afterwards.
